New Look Tigers get their Groove Back

Just when Katy fans were wondering when their team will establish their own identity, the Tigers come out and dominate in the first round of the 2009 playoffs against the Stratford Spartans. And that wasn't even the biggest surpise. The Tiger coaches shocked their players, and the players payed it forward by shocking the sellout crowd when, for the first time ever, they ran on the field in new black jerseys.
From that moment on, the Spartans never recovered. Not from the Jerseys. Not from the kickoff return for a touchdown. Not from their own wide kick on their first posession. And certainly not from Will Jeffrey's 69 yard 2nd and 1 run into the endzone to put the Tigers up 14 points only 4 minutes into the game.
What the Spartans did manage to do though, was to grind out 195 yards in the first half, to come away with only seven points on an 18 yard catch with 7:37 left to play in the first half. By the time time the game was over, the Spartans managed to stretch their total yardage to 335 yards, and add another seven points in garbage time against the Tiger's second string. Saturday's match up was the second consecutive year that the Spartans have met the Tigers in the first round, only to be sent home early. The two year scoring total is 91-21 in favor of the Tigers.
Katy's standout running back, Will Jeffery had a short day - but his output was anything but. By the time halftime rolled around, Will had wrapped up his day amassing 200 yards rushing, for three touchdowns, on only 7 carries. Donovan Young took over from there and the Tigers took a 35 - 7 lead into the half. The Tigers second string came in after the half, and managed to add another 14 points to the total before sending in reserves to get some big game experience. Final score 49 - 17 Katy.
Regardless of whether Katy's new found identity had anything to do with the new colors, it's apparent that the Tigers are back on track and aiming for their 3rd State Title in as many years.
