Defense Definitely Dominated Dickinson

Defense completely dominated Dickinson.

The Gators dressed out pretty well, but the Tigers came out and handled business. I thought we’d be fine if we came out and played a clean football game. We accomplished that for the most part. The running game got started early for the Tiger offense and that is always a good sign. However, the passing game was as off tonight as I’ve seen it since The Woodlands/Marcus games. The point total would have been higher if the offense was clicking on all cylinders, but that’s something to work on for next week. The long passing game has been pretty inconsistent lately and we need to get that going again. That will open up defenses even more if we can hit that again. We had open receivers all night, but the passes were off or pressure forced a scramble. Again, that’s something to work on. I thought Webber looked great for the third week in a row. This offense needs his ability so it is very encouraging to see him run well. Will Jeffery also got loose. The spin move he dropped was just ridiculous. He put Dickinson in the spin cycle there.

The defense shut down the running game and forced Dickinson to try and pass every down. The Gators only success came on passes they tossed up for their playmakers. They had some very talented skill players who made a few nice plays. Our positioning definitely could have been better, but they did make a few great plays. Dickinson had a bunch of specimens out there, but they weren’t very cohesive. We blitzed their QB all night and planted him for some big losses. The defense did a great job with pressure considering Dickinson’s pedigree on the offensive line. Four of the five line starters for them are apparently D1 commits. They didn’t have much of an impact tonight. We’ve seen a few big OLs this year, so I thought we’d be well prepared for it.

I thought the special teams did a good job in the area of kick coverage. We kicked it deep for most of the game and we did a good job covering. They have some very fast players.

I’m glad the game didn’t get out of control in the second half because tempers were flaring in the first half. The officials must have said something to both teams at halftime because I didn’t notice any big problems in the second half.
