It became apparent in the first quarter that all the Tigers needed to do was put a couple scores on the board, and that they'd be in great shape. Atascocita's offense didn't offer much of a challenge for the Tiger defense. It is very difficult to run that kind of offense without a running QB, but obviously it worked for them more times than not. I thought Katy's DBs did a good job of staying with people downfield, and only got fooled on the razzle dazzle. Katy's defensive line played an outstanding game. John Sampa has really come into his own lately.
Atascocita's defense held up better against Katy's running game than I expected before the game. The Tigers ended with 295 yards on 50 or so carries, which certainly isn't bad. Katy was able to wear them down a bit. Atascocita adopted a similar plan to what we saw against West Brook earlier this year, and loaded up completely versus the run. Katy didn't hit the kind of passes it did against West Brook to loosen things up. The passes were open, but were just missed. The Tiger offense will need to execute at a much higher clip in the passing game to accomplish what they want to accomplish, but it wasn't a big issue this week.
Against better teams, each play is hugely significant and you never know how many opportunities you will get. Katy has to punish teams that think they can put 10 guys within five yards of the LOS. Stock's scrambling was a weapon today, and Nick Taylor came up with a couple big catches. And we even got a Swanson sighting in the passing game.
I thought the Tigers did a good job taking care of business today, and now we turn our attention to La Porte.
